OFFICAL NEWS

Summary of the decisions taken by the Executive Committee in Zurich (SUI), February 5 - 8, 2004.

GENERAL INFORMATION

A young, 15-year-old American trampolinist died as a result of injuries from a bad fall at a Junior’s Competition in Knoxville (USA). The entire international gymnastics community is in shock and offers its sincere condolences to the young gymnast’s family and friends.

Hungarian Agnès Keleti, five times Olympic champion at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki and 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne, received the Trophy of Merit form the Hungarian NOC.

Sad day for USA Gymnastics as the sport lost one of its most revered officials. Marilyn Cross, 62, died of cancer that she had been battling since early 1993. She received her FIG Brevet in 1979 and was well known internationally for judging at major competitions. She was able to get to the crux of any matter, make logical, equitable and sometimes difficult decisions and then express them in her own inimitable style. Her family, her friends, her students in over 30 years of teaching and the myriad of people in her rich and varied life all cherished her “seal of approval”.

Elections were held at the SEAGCON (South East Asian Gymnastics Confederation) December 7, 2003 at the General Assembly in Hanoi (VIE): Mr Noel Buenaventura (PHI), President; Ms Ng Soh Lan (SIN), Dr Vichai Vanadurongwan (THA) and Mr H Zulkifli Nurdin (INA), vice-Presidents; Mr N Shanmugarajah (MAS), Secretary General. Principal decisions: The next South East Asian Games will be held in the Philippines in 2005. The 2005 Sea Games, set for Manila, will include events in ART, RG and AER. Rhythmics groups have not been included. Members request that the FIG organise ART competitions for Juniors without delay, based on the FIG Age Groups Programme. For the first time in history and because of its gymnast NNG Shu Wai, SEAGCON member Malaysia will participate in the Olympic Games. Laos (LAO) has been admitted to the SEAGCON and is invited to request FIG affiliation.

The FIG and UEG have harmonised their “Media” Rules. In the future and to simplify things for journalists, provisions governing accreditation and work in the venue have been made to conform to common general principals, valid for both European Championships and World Championships. Conformity to these principals will extend equally to the FIG Unions.

2003 – 2004 World Cup Finals for Olympic Disciplines!

The 5th World Conference on Sport and Environment took place in Turin, December 2003, as an informational conference aimed at developing a “Partnership for lasting development”. Professor Bruno Grandi, FIG President and IOC Member, and Ivan Weber, Executive Committee Member, represented the FIG.

July 17, 2004 will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Anton Pavlovitch Tchekhov. So what? Well, this inspiring Russian author is also the founder of the Russian Gymnastics Federation. His talent as a writer is desperately lacking in the editing of the FIG Code of Points!

IN SHORT

We are sad to announce the sudden death of Mag. Franz Fetti (age 57), President of the Austrian Gymnastics Federation. The FIG Flash offers its most heartfelt condolences to his wife, family and friends.

A samurai in business! Former fencing champion Michele Maffei has just been named Secretary General of the Italian Gymnastics Federation. Her experience in competition and her wide-knowledge of sports management are precious to the Peninsula’s gymnasts.

Singapore (SIN) has a new Gymnastics Association duly recognised by its National Olympic Committee: Singapore Gymnastics, directed by Ms Carmee Lim. The Association practises all FIG disciplines.

In response to the question of which was the national sports event of the year, the Brazilian daily A Folha (12/27/03) answers Anaheim, remember the gold medal of Daiane dos Santos, with 67% of its readers. Gymnastics beats football in the land of Rivaldo! Gooooooooooooooal!
